I know the kind of relief and excitement which floods through us whenever we hear the words ‘free’ and ‘messaging’ together, but don’t get your hopes too high. The uniqueness of the HoverChat SMS app for Android is not that it gives you the ticket to start sending free messages to your contacts but that it allows you to multi-task i.e. it allows you to view an incoming message even when any other window is open on your device’s screen.

What really happens is that a chat-head bubble appears, containing the contact picture of the person who has texted you (if he/she has an image assigned to their contact). Once you click on the chat-head, it expands into a little box and shows you the message, without the changing windows. You have the option to expand the chat further and even make the chat partially transparent. In case you want to reply, normal subscriber charges are applied on the messages sent.

Warning! Do not take this to be a free-messaging app! It is a free Android app, and it is a messaging app to send SMS, normal subscriber charges are applied!

You can apply several themes to your chats. The app comes with two default themes to choose from, bright and dark. For other themes there is the Store from where several attractive and cool themes can be downloaded and applied. It also comes with cool emojis. The Settings option allows you to customize the app for yourself. You can choose as to which of the contacts can disturb you with their chat-heads when you are in the middle of something important. The app is also efficient in using the battery. You can keep your chats open for as long as you want without worrying about the battery levels. Formerly known as Ninja SMS, the app changed its name because of the hovering facility which the chat-heads come equipped it. You can take your chat window anywhere you want to in the screen by simply dragging it. If you want to view it full-screen, you just tap at the top bar twice.

There’s a slight hitch certain users might face while trying to install the app on their device. In case your device has apps like Handcent SMS, Go SMS Pro and MySMS, HoverChat does not function properly since all these apps tend to fight among themselves so as to gain priority while receiving messages. So it is the developer’s advice to either disable or uninstall the other apps before installing HoverChat.

What really impressed me about the app, in spite of the multi-tasking things is that it offers the user an easy switch to disable it any time the user wants. Now that’s really something which seldom other apps provide. Yes, you have the options of deleting your accounts or deactivating profiles, or more commonly, logging out – but all those require a little bit of wandering. This switch is absolutely and unabashedly in-your-face, all you need to do is slide it off.

Good messaging app to enhance the capabilities of your Android.

However, we choose to ignore these as he sometimes comes up with good ideas notwithstanding the fact that they are articulated in confusing managerial jargon; perhaps explained by the fact that he is an MBA from IIM Bangalore.
