Missing important meetings at their workplace can be catastrophic for anybody. Have a meeting with the board of directors regarding a sudden issue which has cropped up out of nowhere? But you are on a sick-leave; you surely can’t go to the office and attend the meeting! However, technology can make the office appear in front of your face through cloud-based video-conferencing services. You get to attend the meeting, make your suggestions, contribute appreciatively – and take the credits by sitting at your home, enjoying the fruits of a sick-leave (unless it is a legitimate one! ‘#wink’)!
Blue Jeans App Icon
The Blue Jeans Network is synonymous for providing video conferencing facilities through their network, and some partners like Cisco, Microsoft Lync etc. Their service is “inter operable" and completely “cloud-based". Since more-or-less all of us nowadays are the proud (it’s okay if you are not) owners of our Android Smartphones and tablets, they have come out with their Android version so as to ensure high portability. You can now take part in a meeting via your device from literally anywhere, as long as your device has a working internet connection. It’s the best app to stay connected to your work, while being away from it. The app also has an iOS version.
The Welcome and Signing Up pages
Once you are a verified user of the Blue Jeans network, you just need to login, put in the meeting ID, the persons with whom you will be communicating – and you will put in through with them. The quality of the feed will depend obviously on your connection. Keep in mind that the app a uses pretty huge amount of your Internet data, so unless you are connected via a wifi connection or have unlimited Internet service packs, it’s rather costly to use on a regular basis. When you have been connected the built-in operator will let you know that the meeting has started!
Initiating a meeting
I said that one has to put in a meeting ID. But first a meeting should be initiated. The option to create one is right there in the home page, once you are logged in. Give a name to the meeting, put in the members who are to take part in and create one. Once you put in somebody’s name in a meeting, the meeting will automatically appear on his/her meeting list. They will be given the Meeting ID and the pass-code, by entering which he/she can join the meeting. It goes without saying that all the members of a meeting should have a Blue Jeans account.
A just-initiated video conference. This being just a dummy video conference, the feed is black. However the quality of the received feed in an actual one will depend on your connection.
The app was really efficient. It was easy-to-handle, and has been ably designed. There was a slight hitch which I faced while trying it out before starting on with this app review. It was when I was trying to log in. However, that may well have been due to some network issue. So here is your best buddy, as far as your professional video-conferences are concerned.

Abhirup is our guest blogger on education apps and thought partner. He harbors certain thoroughly misguided self-impressions like he has a refined aesthetic sense (our website’s visuals are NOT inspired by his ideas) or that he has a deep baritone. However, we choose to ignore these as he sometimes comes up with good ideas notwithstanding the fact that they are articulated in confusing managerial jargon; perhaps explained by the fact that he is an MBA from IIM Bangalore.
